Site Settings

This page is a work in progress at this point. The information here refers to 0.762.

General Site Settings

  • Site name: place the name of your site here. This field is improtant. Many themes use this as a variable to dynamically display your site name in the header. It is also used in the browser title bar and to name bookmarks.
  • Site logo: this should name a file that is a small (maximum 300 pixels x 80 pixels) version of your logo, placed in the main PostNuke images directory. Acceptable formats are GIF, JPG, PNG.
  • Site slogan: allows further description of your site and in many themes displays under the site name.
  • Site start date: this is a text field (so you can write your date any way you wish). It is a good idea to set this to the date that your site becomes active. It displays on the built in stats module page.
  • Administrator e-mail address: The address you put here is used in the "From" field with any PostNuke administrative e-mail.
  • Switch site off: If you wish to inactivate your site, you can do so with this option. You will be able to access your site as long as you remain logged in and your sessionID? remains valid. If you log out or are logged you, you will not be able to access your site. Do not panic. PostNuke Swiss Army Knife tool will allow you to reactivate your site.
  • Reason for disabling access to site: This field holds the message that will be seen by visitors when they try to access your site when you have switched it off.

Metatags

Metakeywords: Enter words or phrases, separated by commas, which will populate the standard keyword tag your site presents to search engines.

If you enable "Dynamic keywords" then the keywords will be generated from the content of the displayed page (most used word first). For this to work your theme must have the Smarty plugin <!--[keywords]--> placed in a suitable template, and this plugin must not have a parameter "dynamic" set to something.

You can filter the dynamic keywords by a list of stop words. This list must be placed in a file named "system/Theme/plugins/LANG.txt" where "LANG" is the current language of the user (not necessarily the displayed text). The stop words are listed as one word per line in the file.

Beware that dynamic keywords adds some performance overhead to each page display due to the string operations involved in calculating the keywords.

Themes

Default theme for this site: This allows you to pick the default theme that all unregistered users will see.

Allow users to override theme: Registered users will be able to select among active themes for their personal default if you allow it here. This can provide flexibility in user experience - but it also means that any changes or hacks you make to themes you will have to repeat multiple times to cover all the themes you make available.

Multi Language Settings

Choose the language to use for your web site:

Time zone offset: This should be set to the server's local time zone. Whenever PostNuke displays a date or time, it will use this setting as a reference. Individual users can set their own local time zone in their own account settings.
Activate multilingual features:

Activate user flags:

Auto detect language from browser settings:

Start

Start page (The module index.php is pointing to): By default this is News, but you can select from the drop down menu what content you want users to see when the log in.

Start function type:

Arguments for start function:

News Settings

Number of articles in administration menu: Determines how many articles are listed in the Administration menu. The default is 20.

Number of stories on home page: You can set the default for the number of News articles that appear on the main News page. Individual registered users can over ride this in their personal settings.

Order of stories on home page: Stories can be sorted by date or by the storyID? assigned by PostNuke.

Display pager for News articles: If this is enabled, long articles will be broken into multiple pages with a numbered page navigation bar.

Error Reporting

Send error reports by e-mail: PostNuke can be configured to notify the Administrator (by e-mail) when a visitor attempts to navigate to a page that cannnot be found (an invalid URL).
  • Don't send error reports: disables this option
  • Send error reports for referrers from this domain only: sends an e-mail only when the broken link is within the site
  • Send error reports for all referrers: sends an email when a broken link cannot be accessed from within the site as well as from outside the site. If your site is likely to be 'deep linked' by other sites, this can alert you to the need to restore broken or deleted pages or provide a redirect to avoid frustrating potential visitors.

Enable humorous error messages in error.php: This option enables some humorous JavaScript? error messages.

Miscellaneous

Enable support for legacy modules: If you use any modules that are not fully pnAPI? compliant, it is essential that this be set to YES.

Activate compression: Activating compression enables GZIP compression within PHP, so pages are compressed on the server before being sent to the visitor's browser. This is most important with text-intensive sites and only works with browsers that support GZIP compression. (Older browsers that do not support the GZIP compression standard will display the content normally.)

Footer message

This is a text box where you can enter a footer message. You can use HTML here. PostNuke comes with a default footer message with images and links. You are not required to leave the default footer information about PostNuke here. Common uses include legal and copyright information, privacy notices, contact information, disclaimers. It can also be used for a navigation menu.

Back end configuration

RSS is an XML format that is used to share content between web sites. Other sites can list new content from your site, and these options help configure the content that is sent.

Back-end title: This should be a short title for your site

Back end language: This should be the language used in your News module.

Security

There are three basic security setting options:

  • High: users will have to log in every time they return to the site
  • Medium: users will stay logged in for a set number of days, which you can configure. This is the default setting. Users are tracked by a sessionID? and (as long as they navigate with PostNuke links and not their browser back button) will continue to be recognized by your PostNuke site. You can set how long users remain logged in (in days). You can also set how long an idle user's session remains valid.
  • Low: users will stay logged on indefinitely, unless they choose to log off.

pnAnticracker?: This detects attempts to use HTML on the site in a way that could be associated with hacking attempts and sends an e-mail to the adminstrator with details. It can also be triggered by incorrectly configured HTML code. In PostNuke .76 it is less important than it was with earlier versions.

Use sessions for unregistered users:

HTML Options

HTML tags allowed in posts:

To prevent either intentional or accidental damage to your site and how it is rendered by the visitor's browser, PostNuke by default limits what HTML tags are allowed. This section contains a table that lets you modify the defaults. Unless you understand the implications and risks, you would be better off not changing these defaults.

There are three options for each listed HTML tag.
  • Not Allowed. If this tag is typed into a form or otherwise submitted, it will be visible but not parsed as HTML.
  • Allowed. If the tag is used, it will be parsed as HTML, but no attributes will be parsed.
  • Allowed with attributes. If the tag is used, both the HTML and the attributes will be parsed.

If you know your users well (for example, you have control over who can register), you can safely relax these restrictions. Tags such as image, span, marquee, script , embed, object and iframe pose signficant security risks.

Translate Embedded HTML Characters into Real Characters. This option parses and conversts standard foreign language characters from their "&#xxx" format to real characters, which can be important if your site uses a foreign language.

Enable Safehtml sanitation for output: SafeHTML is anti-XSS HTML parser, written in PHP. It strips out potentially problematic HTML tags. More information about which tags it removes and how it works can be found atPixel-Apes
