Submitting a bug report

Submitting bugs is one the many contributions that you can make to the PostNuke project. A bug report that gets solved for a future release can save other users from the problem you've encountered.

Assembling the bug report

A bug report is only as useful as the detail contained within the report. A bug report of the type "x doesn't work" does not provide the development team with any information with which the narrow down and fix the problem.

When reporting a bug assemble the following standard information
  • Your server environment including php versions, web server type, database engine and version
  • Your PN version including any additional 3rd party modules installed and any modules hooked to the module exhibiting the bug
  • The Steps to reproduce the bug including any test data needed to trigger the bug
  • Any additional information that you think might help the developer

If possible attempt to reproduce the bug in a clean PostNuke insallation within the same server environment as this can often provide invaluable information to the development team.

Reporting the bug

To report the bug you will need to have an account at the NOC. The user database is not synced with the main postnuke site so a seperate registration is required. Once you've got your NOC account you can submit the bug report. On the submission form complete as many of the fields as you can and make sure to include all the information that you gathered earlier

Feedback

Submission of the bug report is the start of an interactive process where the developer that takes ownership of the bug may come back to you for additional information or more details on the information you've provided already so be prepared to assist the developer with further information should it be required.

Once the issue has been isolated and a resolution arrived at you may be asked to test a patch from the code repository.

Reporting multiple bugs

If you encounter more than one bug please report each bug in a seperate bug report. This helps the development process as each bug may be assigned to a different developer and each bug can be closed invidivually once fixed.
