Changes in .8 lanquage files/Post-Nuke English to Finnish.
 Top

  • We have been making a English to Finnish translation to post-Nuke .726. It's allmost completed and one major question came to our minds.

Will it be compatible with .8 Post-Nuke ?

Please don't give us a heart attack by answering "no it won't work"

    Thank you.

    Ville Sädevuo

PS. this project is not that one in the sourceforge. We realized that it must be dead project.

  • Sorry but .8 will need almost a full re-translation.

Firstly the layout of code is different with the real core modules (blocks, permissions etc.) being in a system directory. All modules will be fullly self contained so a lot of translations will be moved from the central global.php. All modules will be API compliant so the language defines for a module that are currently in global.php in the module directory will be split into admin.php/user.php as per existing API compliant modules. Additionally during this re-write to API compliance a lot of features will be tidied and some new features added so this will require new or changed defines.

Further the presence of a whole bunch of new modules will mean the need for futher translations to be done. New modules are Xanthia & pnRender (XTE), Categories, Mailer to mention a few.

Sorry it's not what you wanted to hear....

  • but there are at least a few good news:
checkout nubel - it can make the translation job quite easy (and is a huge improvement to the buggy .72x languages module)...

  • Thank you for your posts. Redoing the whole translation is not so big problem. This version of translation has taken only about two weeks to do. So new translation will be made, if you have cept code "easy read mode" like it's now.

Maby somewhere in this site is the info, but i haven't found it, do you have an estimate of .8 release date? I think right answer is ".8 release in 2004" correct? :)

    But anyhow thank you.

  • Andreas,

As I know nothing about translations and the assoicated problems can I take it from your post that we can drop the languages module entirely?

i've encountered some probs with nubel under .8 but i guess it's not that big deal... right now i suggest not to put any efforts into the .72x languages module icon_wink

Since I couldn't test it anyway - translating to english to what??? then you can be sure that I wouldn't be writing that one anyway... ;)

well - IIRC there were some discussions about differences between english and us english already - and 'klingon' is still on the todo-list, too icon_wink

  • While I have always liked Star Trek I don't see myself volunteering to do the klingon translation anytime soon.... ;)

  • All new translations.
that's going to be a lot of work; you might make an announcement, so people can begin to get prepared - emotionally, if not logistically.

Speaking of languages, there is the content side to consider, as well.
http://pnlab.markwest.me.uk/index.php?module=RSS&func=display&fid=8 looks quite close to what the LanguageFilter is doing at http://www.issho.org - without the multilinguality and filtering, i.e., without giving the user the ability to pick and choose from the languages offered in the content.
Allowing for such functionality - for those who would choose to implement it - is not much of a step, now that you have the above working.

  • Ok Finnish lanquage is now up and running in my testsite and a in a second member(from translation team) testsite.

Is there any possibilities to get the .8 lanquage files. It would be nice to have lanquage ready when upgrading to .8

Lanquage files will be made available to the public later.
Test site is not available to public, not just yet, it will be later.

  • All code (including the language files) is in CVS. Feel free to grab CVS and play with it. I currently in the process of re-writing the installer - the current one is probably a bit behind so i'd use the SQL dump rather than the installer to get going.

However since .8 is still under active development then the language files are subject to change I wouldn't begin any translations as yet.

  • Umm no thanks, i'll wait until it's released to the public. I couldn't even find CVS... ;( I'll check back often to see if its out or not.
