Splitting the articles into two tables???

I'd like to use up more space on the front page. I'd like to have antoher column goind down the side of the front page between the published articles and the right blocks.
Any suggested methods?
I've hacked the theme.php file, but despite things like widht="50%" added to thesection of themeindex I can't appear to control the horizontal sizing.
That is, I can put another clumn in, but the original sotry column wants to take as much room as it wants to and pushed the other column over and off the bowser page.
