    Unable to make database

    What am I doing wrong?
  • ..I'll answer as best as possible..

create the database (nuke) first in phpMyAdmin (or similar).. otherwise root access is necessary.. which is not recommended.. after the DB is created, you'll need to add a user (nuke) with admin priviledges to that DB only. Remember (or write down) that users name/password and the DB created for PostNuke.. go back to http://www.yoursite.com/install.php and enter the info previously created.. do not check the "create database" box.. it's not necessary since you have already created it.

    ..hope it helps..

  • Actually, the issue is that PHP can't communicate with MySQL at localhost, you need to find out from your web hosting provider what the server name for your database is, and the other info would be wise too (Database name, user name & password). MOST hosts use localhost, but not all 1&1 is one who doesn't. I'm sure there are others.
  • Hi Michael..

this error is the one that caught my eye:

    Quote

Warning: mysql_query(): A link to the server could not be established in C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\htdocs\install\newinstall.php on line 38
    Unable to make database

..he's attempting to create the database on install. I was hoping to detail the suggested route (no root).. the info should be obtained from his host/provider, but a DB and user should be created specifically for use with PN.

..the gist of the error is an "unable to communicate". I'm not certain on the policies/procedures of hosting, I was just hoping to disuade the use of root.

    thanks,

  • Actually, I'm installing it on my own computer, so I think creating the DB is what I need to do. Any other ideas while I try this one?
  • Okay, where am I supposed to create this DB folder, and what should I name it? How do I then create a user for it?
  • eh? Do you have MySQL installed?

if no.. what OS are you using?

  • ShawTheatre, you really should read up about MySQL and PHP on some more general forums and websites. The purpose of these forums are to help with PostNuke specific issues, not genearl MySQL/PHP issues. While we will try to assist, you will likely find more help on this particular issue on a general site like SitePoint.com or DevShed.com
  • What's MySQL? I'm running Windows XP.
    http://www.php.net
    http://www.sitepoint.com
    http://www.devshed.com

Read around those sites abit, get a feel for what you're going to need to do to run PostNuke on this set up. When you've got a grasp of the technologies required to run PostNuke, if you still need PostNuke help, come back and we'll help out, but this is not the place to learn about the details of the underlying technologies used by PostNuke.

I hope that doesn't sound too harsh, but we are here to support PostNuke, we have to draw a line some where.
  • Not a problem, thanks anyway.
  • I could use someone to talk to me one on one about all of this, I'm a fast learner, just need some quick response. If anyone wouldn't mind spending 30 minutes helping me out, email me shawtheatre@bellsouth.net Thanks :)
