Changing User names
 Top

  • Group,

I cannot find anything that tells me if this is possible or not.

Is there a way I can go in and change a users name to something else without having to delete their account and have the reregister?

    Thanks much

    Doug
  • In the Admin section under User Administration. Enter the persons username and select Modify from the dropdown and then press submit. You can then modify their username.
You just need to make sure that none of your modules are relying on their username not changing. I'm can't think of any off the top of my head, but they may exist.

  • Ive tried that and it wont let me.

First I get "Error in Nick Name. Could be caused by a space in the name"

Then I get "No authorisation to carry out operation"

    And I am an admin!

  • Problem Resolved........

I had myself set as an admin in the groups setting, but i didnt have the admin set as an admin.

For some reason when my user name was set as admin, and the admin was deleted from the admin group it would not let me edit anything or see the main page either.

But now i know why I couldnt change user names and now the problem is fixed.

    Thanks for trying guys.

  • You will get the "No authorisation ....." error if you hit your back button and try to change something. You have to enter the form fresh again. I wouldn't put spaces in any usernames. If the module developers don't take the proper precautions then spaces in the usernames can cause problems. I don't think the core even handles spaces correctly in its current form. Make sure you have already checked that someone else isn't already using the username that you are trying to set it too first.

The function does work, I've used it personally lots of times. (Of course I've never tried with spaces in the username.)

  • You beat me to it. I guess I should type faster :D Although it sounds like you were having a different problem.

  • GUESS WHAT!

    Problem NOT resolved.

Error in URL. Could be caused by a space in the URL

Just trying to change the password ends up with this error message.

Also trying to change the user name shows this error.

And if i try again i get the no authorisation message.

I dont get it. Im really not liking post nuke very well right now.

For what it has to offer Im not sure its worth all the headaches.

    Can someone help me?

P.S. I did not use the back button on IE.

    Thanks

  • P.S. I have a user name in the member list that has some weird looking symbol to the right of their user name.

Looks like some ball with spikes sticking out of it and silver or grey in color. This is the only account that has this.

  • You are going to need to supply some more information.
What are you trying to change the username to?
    What was it before?
    What version of PostNuke are you running. (Exact version: .723, .726, .726-1, .726-2, .726-3, .750 RC2, etc)
Have you tried doing a View Source when viewing the member list to see what the exact text for the username that has the ball with the spikes is. It may be some HTML character that they are using in their username that you need to enter in as an HTML code in order to access their username.
Have you tried using phpMyAdmin or something similar to change the username directly in the database?

  • Let me look into these questions and see and try.

Any help via phone if i call? usa? or voice over ip?

    Just curious.

  • I dont know what happen but changing user names and passwords is working fine the past couple of times. all i did was have about 3 users take the spaces out between the words in their user name and it seems to be working find as of right now.

    maybe that was the problem?

If the problems come back I will post another reply here and let you know.

Otherwise I guess you can consider this problem fixed.

    Thanks for all you help.
