No, the counter can and will not be adjusted when a forum posting is read, this would be simply wrong IMHO.
What you can do by designing the displayhook template is to show the replies under the news submission (in full view) and show the read count there.
Actually it was planned to release the RC2 of 2.5 last weekend and then Chestnut forced me
to implement the rss2forum (which is working right now, but not committed to the CVS yet) and the News to forum hook. I hope to be able to release 2.6 in the next few days (tm). In the meantime you can always grab the latest daily snapshot from here.
