I'm running PN .762 and can't get the RSS feed to output anything. I get the site info but no news info at all. You can check this at:

http://www.balance-your-health.com/backend.php

I've also tried installing other RSS readers (xBackend and RSSdisplay) and get the same type of output -- in other words, nothing.

Anybody have any ideas on what the problem might be?

The fact that I get the same result with other RSS readers tells me that I must have something set incorrectly. It might be the permissions but I don't know enough about them to tell.

I've also tried to hack backend.php to try to determine exactly where it jumps out but don't know enough PHP to do that either.

Anybody have any suggestions? This was a clean install of 0.762.

Thanks jmcivor. Have checked your post and D/L the most current version of backend.php. No dice. I still get nothing which indicates a permission problem (I think).

HammerHead: My permissions "should" be pretty close to the default settings -- more or less. Admitedly, they're screwed up somewhat because I've spent so much time playing around with them in order to try figure out permissions in general and to break the "permission code."

I've got the CONCEPT of permissions down but nobody seems to be able to give me any SPECIFICS because so much of the actual implementation is module specific - and therefore up to the programmer (another frustration and source of frequent posts, but that's another story).

Anyway, here's a screen capture of my permissions page:



I suspect that it's something simple but those are the things that are the hardest to find! Any ideas would be appreciated.

This is not a high priority for me but I'd still like to get this working eventually. Anybody have any ideas on what my problem might be?

backend.php only lists articles with 'Publish on home page?' set to yes. In your site the news index page indicates that you have no news articles publushed to the home page hence the rss feed is also empty.

Geez Louise! Can it really be that simple?? Yes, ALL of my articles are set to "No" in answer to the "Publish on home page" question since I didn't want a home page that scrolled forever. I'll have to change a couple to see if that's it.

Thanks so much Mark! That at least gets me started in the right direction but it also brings up some additional questions:

What I'm REALLY trying to do is to get a feed of the most recent articles added to my site, a kind of "what's new." I was planning to use the RSS feed to create a list of recent articles.

How does backend.php determine which articles to show?

If all it looks at is the "Publish on home page," then would the same article continue to show up forever until I manually modify it to not publish on the home page?

Are the articles that "publish on the home page" triggered to only show there for a set period of time? Is this the same as "Programming" the story for a later date?


Like a chemist I used to work for liked to say, "I'm not sure I understand all I know about this..."

The number of articles on the homepage is limited by the setting in administration > settings.

Backend.php by defauld displays 25 articles, if there are more than 25 to display.

Yes, but the MINIMUM number of articles that I can set this variable to is 5 articles. I actually don't want ANY articles to appear on my home page but would like to have ALL of the articles included in the RSS feed.

Is there a way to do this? The obvious way is to hack the software and hardcode the number of articles to display as "0" but is there an easier way?
