Hi
I am a bit new to all this!!
Can I set up phpnuke or PostNuke to complete a webpage and enter info onto a searchable database as well as forwarding me the info by email - all from one form?
I am setting up a music collaboration site and at the moment professional musicians complete a form and the info is sent to me by email. I then paste the information into a webpage template including: the name of the HTML doc is the name of the artist.
I then have to create links from my directory to the newly created webpage so that searchers can trawl through the directory and click on a name that appears on a "Blues/Rock - Guitarists" page (for example)in the directory.
I have read a lot of these forum posts and it seems that this notion I have might be feasable. Could somebody let me know if it is possible and how easy it would be for a newbie. If somebody could draft an idiots guide to get me started, I would be most grateful.
Many thanks

it is definately possibleand this is something different. You are asking for an out-of-the-box solution for your specific and personal wishes, which is found nowhere on the internet.
I am thinking of a solution with categories and workflow setup with Pagesetter. But, as a newbie, you have to read a lot of documentation (PostNuke and pagesetter), understand pnRender templating, and get to know the system. This will take you quite some time, depending on your existing knowledge. A manual or guide does not exist and will take a huge amount of time to write.
Installing the packages and modules is where to start with. And explore while you test it.

hey thanks for taking the time to reply!
Ok it is my personal wishes, but I have seen it done on many interactive websites, so it is hardly a new idea!
I will look into pnRender templating and Pagesetter.
I have a basic HTML understanding and I am a fast learner. With the help of these forums I am hoping to get there in a maonth or two.
Thanks

True! And they probably have either hired someone to do this, or have the knowledge and time to do this themselves.
I think a basic PostNuke setup with Pagesetter should get you started. Use the workflow system to get emails when someone posts a new page, use categories for your 'directory' simulation and use permissions to let logged-in users create new publications.
Also, take a look at http://www.pagesetter.net/ with lots of tutorials and templates to learn from. Or, on initial setup of Pagesetter, try making a new publication type and add fields you desire. If you let the module create the necessary templates for you, then editing them afterwards should you get you very far.

Well I just hasn't happened for me.
I have spent three days off and still can't get the thing installed properly on my website.
I have browsed many forums for a solution, but nothing is working!
I am wondering if I will be abe to do the same thing with PHP nuke or drupal or something. i know I can install PHP nuke on my website - could this be the answer?
Regards

hey
thinking about it... I could just set up a separate forum! The members info stored in the users data base of my forum is similar to what I want. Would it be possible to set up a forum without the forum - just the registration and then the search options for users? -

Well... what exactly goes wrong? Without any proper failure or error messages I can't really help you. Also quote what part of the documentation was not clear.
Doing the same thing with another CMS? Probably, Only I don't know how to do that. Trial and error is the solution here probably.
I don't think that a forum will give you a good solution. Maybe you could point me to your website where you have got a clean PostNuke install, with Pagesetter and the proper permissions. And let me have a look.

Ok well thanks for trying to help
I haven't posted the error messages here bofore because I will be crossposting!
But as you've asked here they are:
I have just installed a fresh copy direct from cPannel
I was then directed to the admin page:
http://musicollaborate.com/postnuke/
here I get the error message:
Fatal error: call to undefined function: themeheader() in /home2/hugeknot/public_html/postnuke/header.php on line 42
I have also tried running Swiss Army Knife and this tells me there is no table "vars" in my data base. This is true!
I have also tried installing other CMS programmes and with these I seem to have a problem with my phpadmin password... as far as I can remember, I use the same password for all of my applications.
I have explored phpadmin and can't seem to find a place to edit or recover my password.
I hope this gives you enough clues to work something out!
Cheers

The fatal error message you gave is generally indicative of a problem related to a theme and its files. Perhaps you noticed that in your post it is an active link - to info about it in the Wiki. I'd probably start by re-uploading the entire themes directory and then seeing what happens when you go to your site link.

Ok
I had another look at that active link and it told me:
"While the actual line number will vary between versions of PostNuke this error indicates a problem with the new theme. There are a number of possible causes:
* A problem in the coding of the theme."
I think this could be most likely!
"* A problem with the uploading of the files. PHP files should be uploaded in ASCII mode in an ftp client."
I didn't upload the files, they were available in the scripts library on my cPannel!
"* A problem with the location to which the files where uploaded. Possibly the theme has been uploaded to themes\theme-name\theme-name. The key file is theme.php which should be located in themes\theme-name\theme.php"
I checked the hierachy and that seems to be in order!
The problem can be resolved using the PostNuke Swiss Army Knife? tool."
But in my case - the PSAK gave me a database error. -

The one time I used an ISP provided installer script, I could not make it work. It turned out that the host was not terribly good about keeping their script tuned to install the current PN version. Does your control panel tell you whata version you are getting when they install?
The commonest cause of this error I see here is a theme issue.
I'd think the first, easiest thing to try would be to download the current PN from here, and then use ftp to replace the theme directory in your site and see.
But what I'd recommend is that you discard the whole shooting match that was installed by their script and follow the directions in the doc directory of the PN 0.762 you download from here.
Just my take - but you have no control over what their scripts do.

Ok
bear with me coz I have now been up all night trying to do this!
I downloaded the most recent stable version and uploaded in ASCII via my ftp.
I went into the install.php which told me the Xanthia_Config etc files were not with the correct write access... Actually they were not there! My ftp client hadn't uploaded them for some reason. Ok - I created a pnTemp directory and uploaded the files and then checked the permissions.
Then went back to the instal.php which gave me this message:
*************************************************************************************
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /test/postnuke/html/install.php on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/1.3.37 Server at http://www.musicollaborate.com Port 80
*************************************************************************************
This has never happened before! I think it may be a problem with my server??
Anyway... I decided to hide the complete PostNuke file and try again with the install from cPannel. my intentions here were to then replace the themes directory from the uploaded version - as you suggested.
when I tried to open the admin.php I get a download box asking if I want to open the file or save it to disk?? If I ask to open it it browses through the list of directories in my downloaded PostNuke in MyDocuments. I really havn't got a clue what is going on and it is nearly day six of this!!
