logout should be possible via user.php
regarding the menulinks i guess you've an bug within your permission schema - thus showing 'wrong' links.

The point is, without admin menu available, how do I modify anything?

logout via user.php / login via user.php

The problem is somewhere else. I can see the administration and logout links in the left menu when I visit the homepage. It is just that clicking on administration does not get the admin menu. This is after I tried to login as a simple user from the same IE screen..to check whether ordinary users could post comments...after logging out and logging in as admin, I cannot get the admin menu..

this is configured via permissions for the Menublock:: component

this usually means you have no overall admin permission

clear your local cookies, try to empty (not drop!) the prefix_session_info table and try again

I see the pn_sessions_info table (presumably, prefix translates to what I have). I emptied it (It had so many entries with user id 0...that must have been ONE of the problems). That does not help.
I recollect that while moving to 0.76 (from 0.72 I think), I might have fingered with some of the database entries..as a result of which I often see 0 unlogged and 0 registered users when I login.. It used to correct the error soon..
Perhaps, the present trouble is the end result of that.. Is there a way I can check the integrity of entries in the database?

Has anybody come across a message to the effect 'there are 0 unlogged users and 0 unregistered users' when you visit the site? What could it be due to?
thanks in advance,

Finally, I figured out two things. 1. the 0 unlogged users and 0 unregistered users message is possibly due to Time non-synchronisation. A click on home again gets the status right (it always did). 2. The admin screen was lost while I was trying to deal with the comment spam. I checked the user_permissions table, found only one entry with user_id -1 and permission 300 (comment only), so I added another entry to give admin permission for everything, and things are fine. I wonder whether that is the proper thing to do.....
