I'm planning on putting together a "community" site for my family, and was hoping for suggestions on modules/configuration/etc to accomplish this. Both free and paid solutions are fair game.

Here's the end goal for the site:
It would house accounts for each of the family members, in-laws, and if desired, out-laws.
They would have single-signon (preferably silent so they aren't asked more than once per visit) to the following capabilities:

• E-Mail, including webmail and POP3/etc
  
• Blogs
  
• Photo Galleries
  
• Forum
  
• Chat
  
• IM
  
• Wiki
  
• Files
  
• Calender
  
• Genealogy
  

Each of these capabilities would to be made available on multiple levels, including individual, family, and global.
Some examples of the desired community aspects are:

• Member1 can post to the global "news" blog, create and post to a personal blog, and create and post to various "family" blogs (eg: one for his household and one for his nearby relatives).
  
• The whole clan should be able to view a single member's calendar, or even an entire family's, but only see the events that are marked as visible to the clan. At the same time, every member should be able to invite other members to their events, etc.
  

Any suggestions on what modules to use, how to configure PostNuke (eg: permissions), or any other comments are appreciated.

I don't know much about chat or IM. Not sure what you want to do with genealogy. PN has its own Downloads section for files to download - but there are a couple 3rd party options.

The commonest cause of problems is solutions.

For the genealogy, I would recommend The Next Generation …ealogy Sitebuilding also known as "TNG". While not free, it is reasonably priced and has excellent support. To integrate into PostNuke, you can use the free helper module pnTNG. You can see an example at my site.

Well, since you are using PostNuke, I recommend you try PostNuke Chat Module and Chat Block for 123 Flash Chat Server Software.It has lobby chat, private chat, and video chat function.

It can be seamlessly integrated with PostNuke so your family don't have to register or log in again. Once they are logged on to PostNuke, they can enter chatroom easily; the chat statistics can be displayed on your PostNuke, including how many chatrooms are available, how many people are chatting and who they are. Users can also choose a popular room to enter directly.

Also, I just implemented PhotoGallery, a nice, easy use, easy to template, photo gallery module developed by Nate Welch (http://www.natewelch.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Sections&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=8)

I have also integrated TNG for a site but unless you are doing heavy duty genealogy I wouldn't recommend it although everything said about it is good. But in my experience it was too difficult for the 'older' members of the family to use since they aren't all very computer savvy. And it seemed that most people who were interested in genealogy were older. :) I would also recommend using the Pagesetter/pgCalendar combo for your calendering features since you can use workflow so members of the family will be able to submit events etc. :)

Please keep us updated on your progress and which modules you decided to use. I know there is a lot of information here and if you're new to PN then it can be somewhat overwhelming.

The only two features I don't know of modules for are email/IM -- I've seen some solutions in the past but can't recommend anything that integrates into PN seamlessly so if you find something let us know. Although, as someone mentioned above the 123FlashChat could be a solution to your real time communication needs :) -- and I know someone else is working on chat module too. You might want to check the NOC.

To be honest, I found out my host had single-click install for Joomla, so I'm trying it out first, but I do appreciate all your suggestions.

At the moment, I'm going with "best of class" along with bridges to tie them all together, so far that includes:
Gallery
phpBB
WordPress Mu
mediaWiki
WebCalendar
TNG

And while TNG may seem hard, the members of my family most likely to use the geneology program are coming from a DOS based gedcom program, so I don't see much difficulty there, though I may be surprised.

Still, keep the suggestions coming, even if I don't end up with PostNuke, I'm sure others will appreciate them down the road.

Let us know how Joomla goes for you. :) BTW: Your host didn't have a 'one-click' install for PN? Shame on them cause I know it's included in Cpanel etc.

BTW: just a note, it is going to a 'bear' maintaining all your seperate programs -- good luck! ;)
