As you may have read in the past, with the release of PostNuke .8 Final, we plan to have a new downloads interface. We will use Axel's EasyDist module (see a demo here) - enabling you to build a custom package from the ground up, automatically building a compressed archive containing any modules and themes from our extensions database.
Part of this work will involve changing and expanding the extensions database to include new fields. One of these is a category field, which we will use in EasyDist's interface. We could use some help from you defining our category tree - what's the best way to categorise all the modules and themes PostNuke currently has, or might have in the future? We'd like your suggestions in this topic below.

Simon

I think that Axel has a very well 'taxonomy' in EasyDist demo...
Just get in consideration the third party modules availables at the categories that Dave mentioned, the SVN integration and it's ready to go!
Congratulations to Axel fot that great work
and thanks for give to the Community that powerfull tool.

Why not put them in categories based on default placement in the Admin Interface. Then by keeping the cats simple you can do keyword based organization. This would make navigation simple, yet give alot of fodder for a search to get ahold of and make relationships between modules that categories(short of being in multiple categories) more complex. It would also make authors give plenty of thought as to where their module belongs(fewer "3rd Party") and users an easier time finding the modules once installed.
Just an idea,

Admin categorization is customizable. I for instance split stuff into groups for who has access to what on some sites. Other organization techniques for different sites..
Modules are Core (System), Add-ons (maintained my the Devs) and 3rd Party.
IMO, relationships should be definable my the system admin, not the module developer.

I see your point, though keeping the categories simple and using keywords to make the it flexible would keep the categories from becoming a spiderweb that need constantly maintained. To even farther simplify the keywords you could turn them into bool or a multi-select field, this would make for the standardization(and multi-language) of categories, but items from different categories can relate to each other, but would again require ongoing maintenance if more keywords are needed. -

The trick is indeed to find the sweet spot... not too many categories- where every module has its own category.. or too few, where all the modules are in only a few...
I think that is part of this defining process...
I totally agree that items can belong in different categories... and similar functioning items may belong in different categories altogether. (for example Mediashare and personal gallery).

Personally for me, because of the lack of new modules or the ease of finding them in the new database, it has made me lose interest in PostNuke all together. I think the new PostNuke site is nice but the lack of the categorized modules and not seening modules being updated or added regularly has (I think) really hurt the community. I have been using PostNuke since 2001 and seen it grow and change and I am still a believer in it. We just need to get the modules sections back online where the community was more involved with the modules and watching them be built and provide feedback for the coders.
Just my .02.
