GoDaddy uses php.ini to control PHP settings in the root directory. The htaccess file included with PN .8 RC3 has some PHP switches that will cause GoDaddys Apache to return Internal Server Error 500.

Just a heads up if someone else runs into it. I didn't read any docs so may have been answered elsewehere :)

If GoDaddy uses suPHP (or something like it), that is your problem. On my host, I can setup my .htaccess to point to my own custom PHP.ini file, which has the switches set how I want them per PN recommendations. With suPHP in place, you cannot include such switches in your .htaccess file.

So yes, maybe there should be some documentation somewhere that indicates that this will be a problem for certain server configurations. I know not all server configs can be included in the docs because there could be a million of them, but suPHP seems to be pretty popular.

It probably should not be there as a default setting. I initially called GoDaddy support to report a server issue. They said everything looked fine. No telling how long the "outtage" would have been if I had not chosen to investigate further myself. icon_lol

When you consider that it states those two settings are only really important once 3rd party modules are used, it should be left to err on the side of compatibility.

I have made note of this some time ago in the install/upgrade docs (it has been available with the SVN for . I have also introduced a new document called docs/software-stack.html. These are the docs that come with the installation.

I have also sticked it here in the forums.

If you want it removed, you will have to make a convincing case to the devs. Like many things.. we have to balance and compromise. The lesser of two evils is probably to make the sites secure over inconveniencing a few people who have not read the included docs.

In general, .htaccess files are not an issue with most hosts. This file is put there, not because the developers and PN users with expertise need it, but it is there to protect the more lay users.

Of course all feedback is welcome, and appreciated. And my stance or opinion is not official.

I have reread my notes in the software-stack.html, I will try to more emphasis on this point. So expect another revision. Previous changes were made here: http://trac.postnuke.com/core/changeset/23948#15964
