Help with Core/Button Link Block... Please?

I want to use this block to operate like a normal menu or a normal menu to use images for the top of my center block.
Right now it works fine BUT instead of calling the link to the center block like the side menu does, it opens a new window. I have searched and can't find any notes on how to make these links open in the center block.
Nor can I find any way of replacing the TEXT menu with images only.
Any suggestions or help?
